Temples in Ahmedabad

Gujarat and the city most famous for its handicrafts and dress materials is also home for some of the most famous temples. Some of the temples built centuries ago stand tall and set an example for architectural marvels. There are many famous temples, mosques and churches which are built a number of decades ago and now attract both local and foreign pilgrims. Some of the most famous temples in and around Ahmedabad are the Bhadrakali Temple, Modhera Sun Temple, Vaishno Devi Temple, Akshardham Temple and Balaji Temple.

Situated on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway, the temple is considered as the replica of famous Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir the temple. The temple is always flooded with people and especially on weekends. During the Navarathi season the temple is most colorfully decorated with flowers and lights and is thronged by pilgrims across the country.

Constructed in the year 1992 the Akshardham temple of Ahmedabad sets an example for architectural marvel and fine craftsmanship. With 240 feet in length, 108 feet height and 131 feet in width the temple is fully made of pink stones and no steel structures were used. The temple stands on a multi acre garden and also has a herbal garden, park for kids, a lake and a waterfall. 

The 7 foot long Lord Swaminarayan idol covered with gold is the chief deity. The temple also has a museum and Akshardham Center for Applied Research in Social Harmony (AARSH) making it a unique temple with education, art, architecture, exhibition and research all under one roof.

Another most beautiful and prominent religious place in Ahmedabad, Hutheesing Jain Temple was built by Seth Hutheesingh 1850 AD. Dedicated to 15th Jain Trithanakara Dharmnath the double-storied white marble building the temple is truly a must see monument. The temple is surrounded by 52 shrines each shrine decorated with an image of Tirthankara.

International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple built in vast area with number of trees and tranquil environment is a best place to visit. Also called as the Hare Krishna Temple it is dedicated to Lord Krishna and his wife Radha. The temple holds prayers both in mornings and evenings. The best time to visit the temple is when it celebrates two main festivals, the Janmashtami and Nand Mahotsav which are related to Lord Krishna. The temple can also be visited on other days.

It is believed to be the first Narayan Swamy temple built in 1822; the temple is located in Kalupur in Ahmedabad. The interiors and exteriors of the temple are beautifully designed in Gujarati style and the temple also consists of nine tombs which are famously called as 'Nau Gaz Pir' or Nine Yard Saints. Burmese teak is used in carving the designs and the temple has beautiful sculptures of Lord Swami Narayan.

Most famous for its structural design Modhera Sun temple is one more beautiful temple to visit. The temple consists of three chambers which are Guda Mandap, Surya Kund and Sabha Mandap each with a specific reason behind it. Guda Mandap is the main sanctum sanctorum; Surya Kund is a tank which is beautifully carved whereas Sabha Mandap is a place where all religious matters are discussed.

Bhadrakali Temple in Ahmedabad

Located in the Bhadra Fort built in 1411 with lush green gardens and palaces the Bhadrakali Temple is also most famous in Ahmedabad. The temple is built by the Marathas during the Aazam Khan rule. The temple is richly decorated and worshipped during the Navarathri festival season.
