The Shreyas museum is one of its kind, mainly focussing on the folk art and culture of Gujarat. Founded in April 1977 the museum is situated on the Shreyas Foundation campus on the beautiful Shreyas Hill.
Attractions of Shreyas Folk Museum
The several exhibition galleries showcase exquisite embroidery, bead work, wood-carvings; metal work and house hold objects, collected and curated from all over Gujarat. Among the other items on display that you cannot miss are caparisons of camel, horse and bullocks. An interesting display is the cultural representations of several communities of Gujarat: these include the Kathi, Rabari, Ahir, Charan, Bharvad, Kanbi, Koli, Mer, Bhansali, Rajput, Brahmin, Vania, Meghval, Khoja, Bohra, Memon, Miana, and many other communities are represented. Making the understanding easy for the viewer, the museum has labelled photographs next to the displayed objects giving a brief overview of the item.
Sections of Shreyas folk museum
The Shreyas folk museum is an informative and educational museum located close to the suburbs of Ambavadi near Sabarmati. The museum can be conveniently divided into three sections: The first would be the Shreyas Kalpana Mangaldas Balayatan Museum. This section is a museum of Toys, Crafts and Performing Arts and has items on display from over 54 states and countries.
Nothing short of a treasure trove, some interesting things that you cannot miss would include the large elephant skeleton, coins, articles for personal, ceremonial and domestic use, weapons, toys, costumes, masks, puppets, musical instruments and objects made of wood metal, cloth, paper-mache, leather, clay etc.
The next section would be the Kathani that was established in 2004. This is a Gallery that displays the Shreyas fairs and festivals. Seeing fairs and festivals as important factors that influence the understanding of diverse cultures, Shreyas has celebrated thirty-six festivals since 1952; each celebration inspired from a diverse region or country of the world. Kathani is a permanent gallery of the Fairs and Festivals held at Shreyas, comprising puppet shows, shadow plays, folk and classical performances of art, craft and food.
