The ancient name of Ahmedabad is “Karnavati” and the city was found in 11the century by its then King Karandev 1. The city of Karnavati was very powerful and was eventfully conquered by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411, from where the city received its name Ahmedabad.
The city of Ahmedabad was a well planned city situated in the eastern area of Sabarmati. Ahmedabad played an important role in India’s independence movement and Mahatma Gandhi from Sabarmati ashram taught the world the concept of Non Violence which ultimately helped India to win its freedom in 1947.
The city of Ahmedabad is both traditional and modern. The Indian government had declared Ahmedabad to be a “Mega city” in 2005. The city is run by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and includes thirty Gram Panchayats and around seventeen other municipalities under its legal jurisdiction. Motera and Chandkheda is also included under AMC jurisdiction. The city currently is spread over 464.16 sq km and its current population is over fifty million people. The city is growing in leaps and bounds and the city is busy with its various construction works which is seen in and around the city.

After Chandigarh, Ahmedabad is the second planned city. The AMC is responsible for the maintenance of major city offices, residential areas and major centers. AMC has divided the city into five major regions to create an efficient administration and control. These areas are as follows-
