Localities and Areas in Ahmedabad

The ancient name of Ahmedabad is “Karnavati” and the city was found in 11the century by its then King Karandev 1.  The city of Karnavati was very powerful and was eventfully conquered by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411, from where the city received its name Ahmedabad. 

The city of Ahmedabad was a well planned city situated in the eastern area of Sabarmati. Ahmedabad played an important role in India’s independence movement and Mahatma Gandhi from Sabarmati ashram taught the world the concept of Non Violence which ultimately helped India to win its freedom in 1947.

The city of Ahmedabad is both traditional and modern. The Indian government had declared Ahmedabad to be a “Mega city” in 2005. The city is run by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and includes thirty Gram Panchayats and around seventeen other municipalities under its legal jurisdiction. Motera and Chandkheda is also included under AMC jurisdiction. The city currently is spread over 464.16 sq km and its current population is over fifty million people. The city is growing in leaps and bounds and the city is busy with its various construction works which is seen in and around the city.

Ahmedabad Old City

Ahmedabad is divided into two parts, the old city and the new city. The important localities of the old city are:

  • Kalupur
  • Shah-e-Alam

The important localities of the new city are:

  • Vastrapur
  • Ellis Bridge
  • Naranpura
  • Ambawadi

In accordance of the division of the two part of the city, Ahmedabad has few important tourist attraction places. It has the widest variety of museums, monuments, religious places and lakes. Lothal is a place near Ahmedabad is regarded as one of the historic places found in that area. It is said so because it is being found around 4500 years earlier and is believed to be  connection to the great Indus Valley Civilization

The City-Plan of Ahmedabad

After Chandigarh, Ahmedabad is the second planned city. The AMC is responsible for the maintenance of major city offices, residential areas and major centers. AMC has divided the city into five major regions to create an efficient administration and control. These areas are as follows-
  • Eastern Region of Ahmedabad
This area of the city gets separated from the other portions of the city, as a railway line passes thru it. This area has large presence of textile industries of Ahmedabad in the form of manufacturing and weaving industries. It is one of the main industrial areas of Ahmedabad. The Lal Bhahadur Shastri Stadium which facilitates various sporting events in Ahmedabad and the airport housing area is situated here. Tourist attractions situated in the area are the Qutabi Mazar, Shaking Minarates and the Hanuman Hall. Various top educational institutions and posh residential area is situated in the eastern area of Ahmedabad.
  • Northern Region of Ahmedabad
This area of the city is dominated by great residential areas where the residents of Ahmedabad stay. There are various housing societies like Shahibag, MeghaniNagar, Nirnay Nagar and Sabarmati. The offices of RTO and Gujarat Electricity Board are in this area. The eastern area of this region has many textile mills. This area also has holy shrines in its vicinity like Ambaji Mandir, Hatheesingh Mandir, Gurudwara Dudheswara to name a few of them. The Sabarmati River divides the northern area into two parts.
  •  Southern Region of Ahmedabad
Kankaria Lake and Chandola Lake area is one of the prominent tourist destinations in Ahmedabad.  This area has beautiful residential colonies which display both modern and traditional elements of architecture in them. Holy places in this area are Swaminarayan temple and Shah Alam Roza. In Mainangar the portion of the city has its own railways station. This area of city also has great areas of entertainment, pools and parks which are maintained by AMC.

  • Central Region of Ahmedabad
The central region of Ahmedabad is the busiest localities of Ahmedabad and large percentage of educational institutions, governmental offices and places of tourist visitation. Important hospitals are also found in this area. Shopping markets and industrial institutes play a prominent element in the area. Small patches of residential areas are also located in the central region of Ahmedabad. Important airline company offices and many restaurants are situated in this area.
  • Western Region of Ahmedabad
The river Sabarmati separates the western region from the other areas of the city. Reputed colleges like IIM Ahmedabad and residential colonies are in this area. The AMC had developed many parks for recreations some of them being Panchavati, Usmapara and Law Garden. Sardar Patel stadium is situated in the area and this stadium hosts various sport activities throughout the year.
