Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary consists of natural lake, shallow lagoons and wetland to rest various kinds of birds. The lake attracts nearly 200 plus species of migratory birds all around the year. Moreover, the sanctuary also houses rare species of flora and fauna.

The Birds which migrates to the sanctuary travels from Europe, Central Asia and rests at the sanctuary during winter and spring season. The birds fly from miles afar to escape harsh cold in their own place.

Lake in the sanctuary comprises of nearly 300 plus islets. The lake gets filled with water from the drains of Ahmedabad and adjoining places during monsoon season. Once the lakes are filled up with water, migratory birds are made available with fishes, insects and aquatic plants to feed it selves. 

The lakes which spreads for 120 square kilometers, also gives life to aquatic plants and animals by continuing their habitation. The water in the lakes is deep by 4 to 5 feet and boats are available near lake for those who want to go ride. The lakes are surrounded by flat plains made of iron. The lakes and the surrounding wetlands are declared as a bird sanctuary during mid- nineteenth century.

Nal Sarovar Sanctuary is a spectacular place where the visitors can hear the chirping, fluttering sounds of thousands of species in birds. The birds arrive at the sanctuary during October and start leaving the lakes by April.

The population of birds will be peak during mid- winter season. Among many of the species, the following are the popular varieties of birds and other animals:
  1. Winter Migrating birds namely Rosy Pelicans, white Storks, Brahminy Ducks, Herons, Flamingos, Grey lag Geese, Spoon Bill, Glossy Ibis, Coots, Cranes, Dalmatian pelicans 
  • Other variety of birds includes darters, storks, cormorants, jacanas, moorhens, grebes and ducks.
  • Animals like wild ass and black buck.

  1. Provides pure drinking water from Reverse osmosis plant.
  2. Records the rare species of birds that visit Nal Sarovar Areas.
  3. Exhibits the place of origin of birds migrated, distance travelled by them and also the wild life .
