Iskcon Temple Ahmedabad

ISKCON logoISKCON - International Society for Krishna Consciousness. It is a Non- profit, social welfare and spiritual organization to preach and spread the vedic heritage from the literatures. It was founded by A.C Bhakti Vedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1966 in the New York post which 108 such temples were established until 1977 all over the world.

The Sri Sri Radha Govindha Dham at Iskcon Temple in Ahmedabad has stone domes which are 50ft in diameter, 3 in number and are hand curved with depictions of Krishna’s life time. It is an architectural mix of the Gujarat Sompura as well as Rajasthani Khamira styles. Decorated by ornate stone clad pillars, marble floors engraved with colored granite designs, windows intricately carved in Rajasthani Mewas style and Khamira as well as Araish decorated ceilings.

It is spread across 4 acres and is one of the biggest temple rooms in India. Nearly 4000 people can be accommodated at a time in the 12000 sq ft hall.

It houses the deities of Radha – Govinda, Nitai-Gauri, Rama Sita Lakshman Hanuman, Jagannath Baldev, Sri Nathji, Subhadraji and murthis of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati.

Activities in Iskcon Ahmedabad Aarti at ISKCON Temple Ahmedabad

The daily schedule followed in the temple includes several Aartis and some classes as well. This schedule begins as early as 4.30 am with Mangala Aarti, Tulasi Aarti, Shringar Dharshan and Guru Pooja followed by Dhoop Aarti, Raj Bhoga Aarti, Pushpa Aarti, Sandhya Aarti in the evenings. Each of these are for at the most half an hour. 

There are also classes for Bhagavad Gita twice in a day. The temple remains closed for almost 3 hours in afternoon.

They celebrate the disappearance day of Srila Prabhupada on 7th November with a number of activities defined for the day. It is one of the major events in a year.

Departments in Iskcon Ahmedabad

There are a number of departments in the temple:

Radha Govinda Goshala and Garden

Home to cows and bulls, it supplies milk to the temple deity department and other departments as well. The cows and bulls are provided with natural grass, grains and vegetables, while milking is done by hand. The bulls are trained to work at an early age and provide assistance in agricultural production in terms of plowing fields and pulling carts.

Sankirtan Department

It is a store house of the books of Srila Prabhupada that is said to brief on the entire Vedic knowledge in practical terms. There is also free distribution of Bhagwad Gita from this department.

Food for Life Department

Saddened by a sight of children competing with street dogs for food, they gained inspiration to feed the hunger pangs of the needy. This kicked off as a Sunday feast, feeding nearly 400 people. It finally took a larger sense with thousands of free meals being provided to needy people in different cities worldwide.

There is a Life membership facility meant for those interested to stay for a couple of days and attend spiritual programs and associate with the Krishna Conscious community.

There is also a restaurant at ISKCON Ahmedabad with a seating capacity for 100. It serves to the vegetarian taste buds with exotic and a wide range of dishes.

Apart from these, there is an ISKCON Youth Forum that is basically directed towards the youth in order to channelize their potential in the right direction for the society’s benefit and also for their own meaningful living.

To accommodate people from all over the world, visiting the temple for cultivating their spiritual lives and benefitting from the spiritual environment in the temple, there is a guest house with about 40 rooms. These are well furnished rooms with variants single/double AC and Non AC rooms; they also have 24 hour room services, hot water facility. They do arrange for sightseeing and provide a vehicle for the same. Staying abreast with the times there is also cyber café to cater to the people visiting here.

The tariffs for these rooms (subject to changes) are:
    AC Room: Rs.2000
    Non AC Room: Rs.1200
