The local community is known in India and around the world for its business acumen. The textile and pharmaceutical industries  has a strong base here. Ahmedabad has been nicknamed the “Manchester of the East” and it enjoys booming cotton, silk and local embroidery business. The first textile industry was established in 1861 by a businessman named Chotalal. 

By 1934 there were around 74 textile mills in the city. But due to depression the textile industry collapsed and has revived today but not attained its former glory. Closely related with the textile industry is the birth of Stock Exchange in Ahmedabad where shares were issued by Sheth Ranchhodlal, to establish his company. The Ahmedabad Share and Stock Broker Association were established in 1894 and the main selling and buying was done in Manechowk area.

Healthcare Infrastructure in Ahmedabad

The city of Ahmedabad has one of the best healthcare infrastructures in the country. This has lead to people from all over the world to visit this city as an element of medical tourism. The hospitals in Ahmedabad mainly the New Civil Hospital, VS Hospital are upgrading their healthcare facilities with latest medical technologies and people from all over the world are visiting this place for primary reasons like-

Pharmaceutical Industry in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad has a strong presence of pharmaceutical business and it’s supporting industries. Gujarat contributes to 42% in India’s pharmaceutical industry and 22% thru imports. The company of Cadila Laboratories was developed around1951. The popular Torrents Pharmaceutical was established by Uttambhai Mehta in 1959.  

Detergent industry plays another important element in Ahmadabad’s business sector. Ahmedabad is responsible for 90% of Gujarat’s total detergent production and Nirma Industries is the market leader in this segment. Nirma Industries can be stated to the largest detergent company and the second largest soap company of the country. Karasanbhai Patel is its founder and is known worldwide as “Soap King”.

Other major industry house’s in the city is the Adnani Group of Industries and this company was established in 1988 by Gautam Adani. Within a short period of time, the company has grown into a massive 3000+ crore company and also enjoys its own private port which is called “Gujarat Adani Port”. In 1983 the SAL industries were started by Rajendra Shah and over the years in became a prominent steel company in India. Rasna is the other popular business house in Ahmedabad. This business house is famous as a soft drink provider and its growth is studied in many management schools.

Healthcare Facilities in Ahmedabad

The city provides great medical facility for its common man. The AMC is responsible for the management of three main hospitals, one specialized TB, one eye hospital, one hospital for the treatment of infectious disease and extended supports to twenty two dispensaries and five other referred hospitals in the city. The AMC also supports 3 public dental specialized clinics and ten maternity homes.

It also offers to two large public hospitals and two specialty hospitals in the city too. There are over 1700 hospital beds in AMC’s municipal hospital and other hospitals provide around five hundred more hospitals. On an annual basis these hospitals perform more than fifty thousand surgeries and over 3 million patients visit them and get healed in return. 

There are over 1300 private nursing homes in Ahmedabad. But the common man heavily depends upon these public hospitals and dispensaries for their medical health problems. The charges in these public medical hospitals are either free or very nominal in nature.

The Areas of Recreation in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad has its share of open spaces and the basic categories are Recreation areas, Open area, Garden area, Green Belts and Playground area developed by the AMC and opened for the public. The western locality of Ahmedabad enjoys most of its open space and south and central areas of the city has major gardens which are built for the public by the AMC.  

Ahmedabad has around 100 parks and these are maintained by corporate organizations like AMUL, Mother Dairy and also AMC to a large extent. These spaces around this area are also used by companies as an important tool of outdoor advertising.

For its adjoining areas AUDA is planning additional more 50 parks spread over 27 hectares. Other types of recreation are shopping malls, movie theaters which are sprinkled over the Ahmedabad city in large percentage. The residents can also enjoy great meals in restaurants like “Mirch Masala”, Patang restaurant and they love the ice creams prepared in Havmor. 

Street food is also very popular in Ahmedabad especially in “Khau Galli” in Law Garden and Khan Pan Bazar in Manechawk where people love eating chats and pav bhaji there. S G Road situated in the western part of the city boasts of having around 100 restaurants which offers great flavors of world cuisine to the residents of Ahmedabad and its tourist population. Gujarat has great collection traditional sweets and you can enjoy the Gujarati Thali’s to get a taste of the local flavor.
