Ahmedabad, the capital city of Gujarat is also the 7th largest city in and 8th populous city in India. With good infrastructure and best connectivity by land, rail and air transport, Ahmedabad has become a hottest destination of investment and industries. Factories in Ahmedabad employee 18% of workers in the state and account for a total 21.5% of factories in the state. Ahmedabad city, Virangam, Daskroi, Sanad and Dholka are the major industrial areas in the district. Apart from large companies Ahmedabad also leads in Small Scale Industries (SSI) number with 61,185 constituting 21.96% of the total units in Gujarat.

Also due to the presence of textile industries a lot of chemical industries which provide dies and other chemicals to fabrics have also grown rapidly in Ahmedabad industrial region. Major petrochemical companies in Gujarat include ONGC, Essar, IOC, Tata Chemicals and others.

Major pharma companies like Cadila Healthcare, Intas Pharmaceuticals, Concord Biotech have their operation in Ahmedabad. With 1,100 formulation units and 400 bulk drug manufacturers Gujarat contributes 30%share in pharma industry for the country. 

The Ahmedabad cluster of pharma companies include Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) companies, Formulation companies, Biological and contract manufacturing companies. Ahmedabad has two SEZs mainly for this particular sector. The PHAEZ (Cadila Pharma) spread over 200 hectares is home for biological, APIs and pharmaceutical companies. The PHARMEZ (Zydus Cadila) covering 49 hectares has more pharmaceutical companies.

The Ahmedabad Plastic Hub has over 1000 companies employing more than 15,000 people. There are many companies manufacturing plastic pipes, rods, tubes and other products. A special SEZ is being developed by Plastene Infrastructure in the Kutch are covering 100 hectares.

Automobile IndustryApart from these industries Ahmedabad is also home for some of the prominent auto manufacturing industries like Tata, General Motors, AMW, Maruti Suzuki and others. Due to the presence of automobile companies the ancillary units related to this sector has blossomed.

Small ancillary units related to manufacturing of oil engines, electric motors, pumps, industrial valves and bearings have grown enormously in three areas in Gujarat namely Sanand in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Halol. The Gujarat government is also concentrating on the Agro and food processing industry.

 The government has set up an Air Cargo Complex at the Ahmedabad International Airport especially for the perishable food products. Ahmedabad city has also seen a growth in investments in agro and food processing sector in the past two decades. 

The Agro/ Food Processing Hub will come up in the Ahmedabad-Dholera Industrial Area which is connected to NH-8 and lies within 100 kilometers of the Dedicated Delhi-Mumbai Freight Corridor. With more and more companies coming up and industries expanding and growing, Ahmedabad has become a focal point for the formation of vibrant Gujarat.
