Administration in Ahmedabad
The administration of Ahmedabad city is undertaken by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), which was established in July 1950 under the Bombay Provincial Corporation Act, 1949. The region under the AMC has been divided into five zones and 43 wards for the purpose of civic administration. Each word elects three corporators by means of popular voting. The AMC is headed by a Mayor who is elected by the corporators. Executive powers are vested in the municipal commissioner, who is an IAS officer appointed by the Gujarat state government. The mayor is responsible for the day-to-day running of the municipal school board, the city bus service, the municipal hospital, the city library and other activities which are performed by the AMC.
The city is the administrative headquarters of the Ahmedabad district and also the seat of the Gujarat High Court. The Ahmedabad City Police is the law enforcement agency headed by a Police Commissioner, an IPS Officer appointed by the Gujarat State Government.
Some of the regions surrounding the city are administered by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). The AUDA is a civilian government body responsible for overseeing and sanctioning construction and infrastructure development across the suburbs of the city of Ahmedabad.
